Recovery Position

When I moved your body into

recovery position

there was no response.

I shifted your head,

aligned your throat with the ground

so you could breathe again.

Knees staggered over each other,

you cradled yourself to sleep

and I checked if you were alive.

I called the ambulance,

just in case your heart beat out of your chest

and you died.

I said, “I don’t know if she’s dead”

and they told me they would come

before telling me to hold on.

While I waited

I kept my fingers to your throat

just like they told me to.

I could get into trouble

if they came and saw you on the ground

alive but breathing

for someone else.
